The Suicide Squad: Every Character Explained

16. Rick Flag

Suicide Squad Peacemaker
Warner Bros.

Returning along with Viola Davis for James Gunn's iteration of the Suicide Squad will be Joel Kinnaman, reprising his role as Rick Flag. While Amanda Waller is the ultimate boss of the Suicide Squad, Flag is the leader in terms of the day-to-day. He had no trouble murdering Slipknot when he stepped out of line, but found himself a true member of the team by the end of the mission.

While Flag was by no means a poor character in 2016, he was certainly not on the same level as the likes of Harley Quinn and Amanda Waller. There is a lot of potential in the character, and hopefully James Gunn and Joel Kinnaman can bring it out.

One potential avenue for development would be the military man's relationship with his father. The DC FanDome panel asked a question surrounding Flag's regret of following in Rick Flag Sr's footsteps, and it's easy to see this angle being worked into the story and development of the character.
