The Thing: A Lesson In Remake Failure

5. All One And The Same

John Carpenter€™s film featured array of characters. Tough, weak, quiet, loud, hot headed, calm, hippy, strict, scientific, spiritual. They were also physically varied: bearded, clean shaven, bald, dark, blonde, grey, curly, fat, slim. The prequel, however features, a host of blonde, bearded Scandinavians, none of which are distinct from another. The one character that hinted at individuality was never expanded on. Griggs shaved with a cut throat razor and this speaks volumes about character yet he had barely 5 lines in the entire film and the only time we saw the razor was when he packed it away. Character and plot development was ignored in favour of a cheao plant for the 1982 film - and that leads onto my final point:

Chiselled, charismatic, intellectual.....these are just a few words in my vocabulary. Loves watching films and believes the best thing about Christmas is watching old people slip on ice.
