If there's any single Oscar which The Trial of Chicago 7 is most likely to win, it is surely Best Film Editing, because Alan Baumgarten's work cutting this film is nothing short of masterful.

The film hinges on how seamlessly Baumgarten is able to cross-cut between duelling scenes, often mid-sentence, to ends both dramatic and comedic in nature.

Without his exacting work, so many of the film's most crucial - and funniest! - moments wouldn't land nearly as well, working in perfect tandem with Sorkin's script as it does.

Though nothing is ever certain until it's certain in the awards circus, don't be remotely surprised if Baumgarten ends up with a gold statue next April for his exceptional work here.

And considering the historically close relationship between Best Film Editing and Best Picture, it certainly doesn't harm the film's chances for the Big One.
