The Trial Of Chicago 7 Review: 8 Ups & 2 Downs

4. The Fantastic Ensemble Cast

Beyond the aforementioned standout work of Mark Rylance, Frank Langella, and Sacha Baron Cohen, the entire movie's cast delivers above and beyond expectations.

Where to begin? Eddie Redmayne is terrific as the more civil-minded activist Tom Hayden, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt brings nuance to the potentially one-note prosecution counsel Richard Schultz, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II gives a dignified performance as Bobby Seale, and Michael Keaton threatens to run away with the entire movie in his small role as former Attorney General Ramsey Clark.

Elsewhere Jeremy Strong is hilarious as Cohen's partner-in-crime Jerry Rubin, and ever-brilliant character actors John Carroll Lynch and John Doman shine in the smaller parts of defendant David Dellinger and snide Attorney General John N. Mitchell.

It adds up to an absolutely powerhouse ensemble that ensures every second of the film is a thoroughly compulsive sit.
