The Trial Of Chicago 7 Review: 8 Ups & 2 Downs
3. Its Timely, Weighty Political Themes
As much as the movie is primarily set in 1969, it's awash in themes which continue to ring true today.
Above all else, it addresses the relationship between the government and its people, and leaps off to examine the role of the police in society, the futility of war, and fraught race relations which are still very much troubling in 2020.
Sorkin being Sorkin, he very clearly makes a wealth of his dialogue pointed directly at the Trump administration, and releasing as the film is mere weeks before the American presidential election, its call to question the government and push back against corrupt institutions couldn't feel more timely.
