After a somewhat dodgy decade of releases from
Brian De Palma, the once A-List director has decided to go back to one of his most successful films and shoot a prequel to try and win back the status he once had in the 70's and 80's. The movie in question...
The Untouchables: Capone Rising (boy you would think it was going straight to DVD with that title), a prequel to his 1987 smash hit
The Untouchables. The movie is set to begin production in June and it focuses on Al Capone's rise to power and the conflict between his enemy Jim Malone, who was of course played by
Sean Connery in the original. The script has been written by duo
David Levien and
Brian Koppelman who have worked together in the past of
Runaway Jury,
Walking Tall and the upcoming
Ocean's Thirteen. Some key bits from the script review from
Latino Review...
"The dialogue and the characterizations are the prequels biggest flaws. The characters are flat in the prequel nowhere near their counterparts in the future. The characterization blows. When DeNiro spoke Mamets dialogue, it made Capone mesmerizing. In the prequel, he is simply a thug who doesnt say or do much.......Sure he has an occasional monologue or two, but for the most part he is reduced to a typical movie heavy without any depth. None of that charisma that both Mamet and DeNiro brought to the character. That sinister charm is completely absent in the prequel". I haven't read the whole script review myself because it seems to be spoiler heavy with lots of plot details, but if your interested in reading it for yourself then
click here. The guys over at Latino Review don't seem to impressed with the script then which is even more bad news for the flick. So let's recap ....
A)We have a bad script B)We have a prequel which never had much chance of living up to the original C)Most, if not all of the actors in the original won't be the right age to return D)A director who in recent years seems to have completely lost the plot. Verdict - Not looking good. source -
