7. The Great British Blockbuster
I love British movies. I mean, as a Brit myself, Ive obviously got a vested interest. British movies are normally (not always, but often) more low key than their American counterparts; cheaper to make, more heavily reliant on scripting and performance. Thats why theyre often so powerful and emotionally resonant. However, with that said, Im also a huge fan of popcorn fodder; the high concept feature; the blockbuster. You dont really get that many British Blockbusters. There just isnt enough money in the film industry over here to make them financially viable as a regular occurrence. However, you do get a few from time to time. I would say that the Pegg/Wright combo is largely responsible for this burgeoning phenomenon. Thanks to Shaun of the Deads unprecedented success in the US, to Hot Fuzzs continued success in theatres and on DVD worldwide and of course Pegg and Wrights own meteoric rise to American mainstream prominence, with the release of The Worlds End, the Great British Blockbuster is upon us once more. Ive got a feeling The Worlds End will be their biggest, most expensive project together yet. And I absolutely cannot
wait to get involved!
