Despite concerns that Joss Whedon's Avengers would fall flat, it exceeded everyone's expectations. The banter is hilarious, the action is exquisite, and the performances are awesome. And for every Marvel geek, it was a dream come true to finally see all The Avengers on the big screen.

For this momentous movie, you'd assume Earth's Mightiest Heroes would battle a distinctive villain that would stand the test of time. Instead, the superheroes fight a random bunch of bland-looking aliens. We don't know who they are, their names, or their backstory. Hell, it's hard to remember what they look like!

Because these creatures' only purpose is to serve as cannon fodder, they are often known as a "faceless army". What's worse is that The Avengers popularised this sort of enemy, since similar armies have appeared in many Marvel films since.
