4. Loki's "Death"
Marvel would have to be more insane than Erik Selvig to kill off a character as brilliant as Loki, which is why they totally didn't do that in this movie. But that didn't stop them from trying to convince us partway through Thor: The Dark World that our favourite Asgardian had sacrificed himself to save Thor. During a cleverly-planned ruse devised by Thor and Loki to free Jane of the Aether (watching them team-up in this movie is the stuff that dreams are made of), the brothers find themselves doing battle with a terrifying monster creature, at which point Loki - saving Thor and killing the beast - is pierced by his own blade. What we get, then, is what appears to be an actual Loki death scene, one that does a rather good job of convincing us that Marvel have genuinely murdered one of their best and most popular characters. As Loki dies, Thor sobs that he will tell his father of what good Loki has done, only for Loki to reply: "I didn't do it for him." Woah - emotional wallop. Brotherly love? Of course, you can't help but escape the feeling that Loki just can't be dead - we've followed this character for two and a half movies, there's no way that he could die at the hands of a measly sub-boss, could he? Nope. We find out that he's still alive, and is planning something terrible. "God of Mischief" has never felt so apt.
