As mentioned, the big emotional crescendo of Thor: Love and Thunder comes with the death of Jane Foster. After contracting cancer prior to the events of the movie, Jane is drawn to mjolnir, which transforms her into a mighty god and allows her to transcend the disease.

We learn later that there's a catch to this: while in Mighty Thor mode, Jane is stronger than ever, however her human body is still being attacked by the cancer. Even worse, mjolnir is using her life force for the transformations, accelerating the disease's effects on her body.

Consequently, before going to face Gorr, Thor pleads with Jane to stay in the hospital. While she may not have long left, there are treatments that could extend her life, and the pair could get more time together. Jane initially agrees, however transforms one final time in order to save Thor from being killed.

Fighting Gorr, Jane uses mjolnir to destroy the necrosword, shattering both weapons. Comforted by Thor, Jane dies in his arms.

At the end of the scene, Jane's body turns to gold magic (echoing Odin's death in Thor: Ragnarok), indicating that she's ascended to Valhalla, and will see Thor again in the afterlife. She lived as a human, but died as a Viking.
