Thor: Ragnarok - 10 WTF Comic Moments You Definitely Won't See

Thor was initially exiled to Earth by Odin to teach him a lesson in humility. Apparently, the best way to do that was by constantly ruining his love life.

While on Earth, Thor was transformed into a human doctor named Donald Blake. Blake eventually found Mjolnir and gained the ability to turn back into Thor. He then split his time fighting crime as the God of Thunder and running a medical practice as Donald Blake with his love interest Jane Foster.

Continuing his run as father of the year, Odin made a habit of swooping in to ruin his son's love life. It started when, just as he was about to reveal himself to Jane as Thor, Odin appeared in a puff of smoke to forbid Don from ever telling another mortal his secret identity.

Odin also ordered Thor back to Asgard as soon as he fell in love with Jane. When Thor just decided to bring her with him, Odin forced her to go through a trial by combat to prove her worthiness. Seeing as how her combat experience up to then consisted of using a scalpel, she lost.

The whole thing made Odin seem like a ridiculously petty jerk, especially because the only reason he ever gave for anything was "because I say so". It sends a pretty mixed message about the whole humility thing.
