Tim Burton: 5 Awesome Movies & 5 That Sucked

5. Mars Attacks (1996)

Any film which concludes with Tom Jones as one of the sole survivors of an alien invasion is pretty good in my book, but Mars Attacks ends up towards the tail end of the bottom five as an average Burton effort. It€™s certainly not terrible, but it€™s not particularly great either, Mars Attacks is a fun but completely bonkers tribute to the B-Movies of the €˜50s and €˜60s as well as ensemble disaster movies from the €˜70s such as The Swarm. With a huge cast including Jack Nicholson (appearing in two roles) Pierce Bronson, Danny De Vito and some of the most bizarre aliens you€™ll ever see in a film ("Ack Ack !") Mars Attacks is easily one of the craziest big budget blockbusters of the €™90s . I€™ve always had a bit of a soft spot for the movie as it€™s just so off-the-rails you can€™t help but enjoy it. Even then, it€™s easy to see why this is a Burton flick which really annoys as many people as it does amuse, and that€™s probably why it was his was pounced on by many critics at the time. It€™s perfectly fine as a solid B-Movie, and when paired with the stunning Ed Wood you€™ve got a double bill that Wood himself would highly approve of.
