4. Corpse Bride (2005)
The Nightmare Before Christmas was so heavily stamped in Burtons style that despite being directed by Coralines Henry Selick, its still often accidentally referred to as a Tim Burton movie. Perhaps this is why he decided to go back to stop-motion animation for Corpse Bride, aiming to create a similarly successful family film of which hed actually have full control. Johnny Depp stars as Victor Van Dort, a meek man who finds himself inadvertently married to a zombie after practicing his wedding vows over a grave - we've all been there. Corpse Bride is actually quite charming and theres plenty of reasons to recommend it. Its deliciously dark - perhaps too dark for its intended family audience - with good voice acting and some stunning stop-motion animation. However, its one of those unfortunate instances where the shadow of another film hangs over it, and Corpse Bride cant shake off comparisons with the superior The Nightmare Before Christmas. Heres hoping Frankenweenie will be a better received return to stop-motion animation for Burton.
