Tom Hanks: 10 Movie Moments That Prove His Greatness

2. "I Just Felt Like Running..." - Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump For a film that's soon to be celebrating its 20th Anniversary, Forrest Gump has had quite a run in Hollywood. From winning the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1994 €“ which some still argue should have been given to Pulp Fiction or The Shawshank Redemption €“ to Tom Hanks nabbing his second consecutive Best Actor award, Forrest Gump has enjoyed both critical and commercial success, and often lands on our television sets just when you want a good cry. There's never a dull moment in Forrest Gump €“ with or without the box of chocolates to munch on €“ thanks to its heart-warming script and stellar performances. Not many of us would sit on a park bench long enough to hear a stranger's story, but Forrest Gump has such a way with words that it's hard to refuse. Hanks brings to life Forrest's carefree nature, his innocence and his relentless love for his childhood sweetheart Jenny. In fact, there are striking similarities to his performance as Josh in Big, but with six years in the profession it's clear that Hanks has mastered this role perfectly. And while there are many stand-out scenes throughout the film, it's when Forrest decides to run for no particular reason that we crack out in a smile all over again. While the running scene may not be the most influential, or even a crucial moment in Hanks' skill as an actor, it is one of the most remembered. For three years, two months, 14 days and 16 hours, Forrest runs across America and, by sheer luck, he doesn't run into any bad weather, apparently. Then when he decides he's ran enough for no particular reason, he says "I'm pretty tired. I think I'll go home now," all while sporting the look of a messiah, albeit in a rain mac and running shoes. And with the parting of the "red sea" he leaves, while Hanks' narration brings the scene to a close €“ simple but compelling.
