Tomb Raider Review: 4 Ups & 5 Downs

Well...it wasn't awful. Yay?

The latest attempt to break the "video game movie curse" is in cinemas now: the Alicia Vikander-starring Tomb Raider reboot.

Is it any good? Well, not really: it's scoring wildly mixed reviews so far, but to its fair credit, it does currently sit as the best-reviewed video game movie of all time, something of a backhanded compliment considering its most aggressive competition was The Angry Birds Movie. Oof.

The new Tomb Raider movie is the perfect example of a "save it for Netflix" film: it's rather dull but occasionally engaging, with some pretty visuals and prettier faces, but far from the thoroughly persuasive hit adaptation fans will be hoping for.

If you're a huge fan of the franchise, check it out for sure just to see the 2013 game somewhat convincingly recreated on screen, but otherwise, this is generic, hungover streaming fodder at best. The wait continues for the first truly good video game movie, sadly...
