Tomb Raider Review: 4 Ups & 5 Downs

3. It Nails The Tone Of The Video Games

Tomb Raider Alicia Vikander

This film is of course based on the 2013 Crystal Dynamics reboot of the video game franchise, which stripped away the rather hokey, over-the-top tone of the earlier games and reimagined Lara Croft as a more down-to-Earth, realistically-proportioned female action hero.

To that end, this movie does nail the style and tone of the new games pretty perfectly. There are scripting issues at every turn, but the look and feel of the film should please those who enjoyed the last two games, and at least shows the filmmakers were taking the material seriously.

There's a lengthy sequence in the middle of the film where Lara's just trying to survive against the elements: there's virtually no dialogue (and therefore no boring exposition), and it's probably one of the best set-pieces from any video game movie to date. It feels ripped from the games in a way so few video game adaptations have ever managed.
