Top 10 Horror Films of the 21st Century

9. Inside (2007)

Inside helped to give the French a leg-up as far as horror fare goes in the last decade; Inside is the sort of horror film that simply wouldn't ever get made or released in the box office juggernaut that is the US. It's a film so disturbing and disarmingly frightening, that it would have to be made abroad on a tiny budget; protagonist Sarah is pregnant, and when her husband is killed in a car accident, she has to prepare for raising the child herself. However, when a mysterious woman comes a-knocking at her door, Sarah has to fight for her life as the woman tries to, believe it or not, retrieve Sarah's child from her womb. It's a horrific concept but one given a thoughtful consideration alongside all the gore; Sarah's fight parallels the female paranoia about motherhood, and the choice of a female antagonist also gives it a fresh feel, rather than the stereotypical psychotic, male masked killer. To their credit, too, directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury deliver fully on the promise of their concept, ending things on a note that's somehow more unsettling than everything that has come before. One of the most underrated and little-known gems of foreign horror cinema.
