8. Antichrist (2009)
Few horror films post-2000 are as memorably depraved as Lars von Trier's hugely controversial psychological horror Antichrist, a film about a husband (Willem Dafoe) and wife (Charlotte Gainsbourg) who, following the death of their son in a tragic accident - he falls out of a window while they are having sex - see their personal lives completely unravel as they try to come to terms with the loss. It's the definition of a slow burn, beginning tame and then slowly building up to an absolutely shattering climax, which saw many people walk out of the cinema, and guaranteeing its limited distribution just about everywhere it was shown. This is one film that actually overcomes its controversy, for though it's rightly divisive given it features graphic scenes of genital mutilation, it's also a psychologically potent and superbly-acted film, excellent in its own right for the consistently unsettling manner in which it broaches a difficult subject, and above all else, it is a film best described as thoroughly uncompromising. See it if you've got a strong stomach.
