9. Looper
Bruce Willis? Joseph Gordon-Levitt? An action-fuelled science fiction narrative that can only end with some kind of time-twisting set piece? All the pieces seemed laid around Looper in place to trip it up with a bunch of mediocre 2-4* reviews; however, from what weve seen emerging from the critics so far, this ambitious new adventure could actually boast the credentials to match classic genre hits like The Matrix, Back To The Future and even (whisper it) Star Wars as a modern day groundbreaker. Of course, positive initial responses to a film never guarantee that youll enjoy it- I recall Scott Pilgrim and Prometheus letting me down for just that reason- but for Looper to already have transcended the boundaries of the ever-expected middling reviews with Willis (known for rather stereotypical roles and productions) and Gordon-Levitt on board really gives this more potential than I expected. Best of all, there really isnt long to go until this one reaches cinemas across the world. Im still yet to be convinced that the protagonist is played by Dark Knight Rises Blake, though- is it really possible to recognise the former cop underneath that wig and make-up? Released on September 28th.
