7. Life of Pi

Ill make a confession: Yann Martels pseudo-fantasy novel Life Of Pi isnt anywhere near my "Top Reads" list, and short of me discovering that I read the wrong book, it isnt likely to earn a place there anytime soon. That said, much of the wonder and interest that the novel evokes could well fit the big screen better than it ever could the page, especially with visionary director Ang Lee at the literal and metaphorical helm. This could certainly be a flick which finds its way onto the Oscar "Best Picture" shortlist come the early months of 2013, and although some of us may be beginning to question the relevance of the aforementioned awards, for others this should be as good a reason as any to check it out. Despite my reservations in terms of the complexity of the overall storyline and the bizarre removal of Tobey Maguire simply on the basis of his stardom contradicting the rest of the cast, I reckon theres plenty of potential for the film to shine in its own right. The special effects look promising, the actors and actresses involved clearly dedicated to making something special and of course Ang Lee appears to be on top form as ever with his direction. Dont count out Life Of Pi - it just might turn out to be a surprise hit. Released on December 21st.
