4. Argo
If you havent heard of Argo yet, believe me when I say that you probably will have come its UK release in November. Brought to screen by none other than Ben Affleck and George Clooney, the Oscar-potent flick focuses on the accounts of Tony Mendez as to how a number of American diplomats were rescued in the midst of what we now know as the Iran hostage crisis of 1979. For those of us who werent around to see that event play out, this piece will prove an education of sorts, and for those who were, therell be a peculiar sense of déjà vu amidst the violence and language that has given the film an R rating in the States. Affleck also stars in the production, though Id say its a fair claim that hes probably the most well-known of the relative set of up-and-coming actors and actresses in the cast. To be fair, though, its often the films which boast little-known names that throw said names into the limelight and acquire awards at a later stage, so thats of little concern. Judging by the first trailers Argo looks to provide a realistic and gritty depiction of the events it is based on, which is always a good sign in an era of cinema where blatant and shallow satire is at its height and so often falls short. Its a shame the Brit advertising campaigns for this are likely to be quite minor, since as with last years Hugo its the movies that are under-recognised in the trailer spots of cinema ads that often stand the most chance of impressing the masses. Released on November 9th.
