Top 10 Physically Disabled Film Characters
1. Christy Brown My Left Foot (1989)
Daniel Day-Lewis starred as Christy Brown in the true story of Brown's life 'My Left Foot'. Brown was an Irish author, painter and poet who suffered severely from cerebral palsy from birth but still retained the use of part of his left leg and his left foot which he used to paint, write and take penalties (see below).
In true Day-Lewis style his dedication to the role was intense breaking two ribs as he refused to come out of character and often irritated the crew as he had to be moved about in a wheel chair and lifted over camera equipment between takes. Deservedly so 'My Left Foot' won Day Lewis his first academy and BAFTA awards for his depiction of Brown
The tag-line reads 'A film about life, laughter, and the occasional miracle' which pretty well sums up how the film makes you feel. Although it has it's share of serious bits the film's standout moments are those that make you smile and in which we're shown that Brown was a bit of a rogue; getting into bar fights, hiding a whisky bottle in his pocket before a speech and writing pretty girls poetry. The central performance is incredible and successfully shows the audience that although Brown's body was wrecked by cerebral palsy he was incredibly clever and creative as well as sometimes a sarcy git to his Dad.
