Top 20 James Bond Moments

19. "We have all the time in the world" (On Her Majesty's Secret Service, 1969)

After Sean Connery announced his retirement from the role of James Bond during production of "You Only Live Twice", the producers of the Bond films, Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, had the daunting task of finding someone who could fill the Scotsman's considerable shoes. Broccoli met Australian model George Lazenby at a barber shop, and then after seeing Lazenby in a commercial, decided to give him a screen test. Lazenby would win the role but would play Bond only once, in the criminally under-rated On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and was said to feel that Bond would be an anachronism in the 1970s. While Lazenby would be proven wrong about Bond's longevity, his one film as Bond is one of the series' very best and he has one of the series' most heartbreaking moments. In On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Bond decides to marry Tracy Draco (Diana Rigg) - daughter of Marc-Ange Drago (Gabriele Ferzetti), head of a European crime syndicate - and give up the life of a secret agent. Draco makes a deal with Bond: he'll help Bond find Ernest Stavro Blofeld (Telly Salvalas), the head of SPECTRE, if Bond will marry Tracy, to which Bond agrees even though he's not interested in getting married. Bond does fall in love with Tracy though and marries her at the end of the film. After getting married, Bond and Tracy stop in the middle of the road so Bond can pick some of the flowers off their car. Blofeld, in retaliation for Bond ruining his evil scheme, drives past their car while his hench woman Irma Bunt (Ilse Steppat) opens fire on Bond and Tracy. Bond gets back in to the car, only to realize Tracy is dead. A patrolman pulls up to the side of the car. In a single shot, Bond tells him, "It's all right. It's quite all right, really. She's having a rest. We'll be going on soon. There's no hurry, you see. We have all the time in the world." The moment, crowned by Bond's rather atypical tears, is one of the truly human moments in the entire series, and one that shows that the often cold-hearted Bond nevertheless has a heart to be broken.
