Toy Story 4 Review: 8 Ups & 2 Downs
Downs...
2. The Original Toys Feel (Mostly) Sidelined
One of Toy Story 4's biggest strengths is training a far greater focus on Woody's (Tom Hanks) own individual story, lending the film an unexpectedly intimate feel compared to its predecessors.
The one big negative of, this, however, is that most of the toys introduced in the first two movies in particular are given a lot less to do, and their frequent absence is definitely felt throughout.
Buzz (Tim Allen) spends most of the story relegated to a fairly perfunctory subplot, while the likes of Rex (Wallace Shawn), Hamm (John Ratzenberger), Jessie (Joan Cusack) and Bullseye just aren't given much at all to do beyond a few scant standout moments.
We'll let them off when it comes to Mr. Potato Head, though, given that voice actor Don Rickles sadly passed away before the movie's recording sessions started.
Still, if the script could've found a neater balance between all its characters, it certainly would've been for the better.
