Toy Story 4 Trailer Reactions: 9 Ups & 3 Downs

1. Familiarity Breeds Contempt?

It's not just the idea of Woody and Buzz being split up that feels familiar about this trailer. It's almost like a Greatest Hits compilation of things we've seen before (which is sort of Disney's MO, admittedly, but it's still not that great to see in the trailer, which is supposed to sell the idea of newness).

As a Cliff's Notes we have: A badass, action heroine (Bo in place of Jesse); Woody becoming lost and trying to find his way home; another toy showing him the promised land (where the reality is not what it seems); a badass action hero (Duke Kaboom in place of Combat Carl); a haunted house element (like Toy Story Of Terror) and the idea of a new favourite toy. That's basically every storyline Toy Story has looked at already.

Even beyond that, there was apparently an abandoned version of a Toy Story sequel in which the toys were trapped in an actual haunted house. So maybe Pixar just wanted to be green and recycle?
