Transformers: The Last Knight Reviews - 10 Early Reactions You Need To Know
9. The Series Continues To Treat Women Badly
"Bay’s flimsy capacity for directing substantial women roles gets especially dicey here, with a cardboard cutout version of a brainy academic who ultimately melts into Wahlberg’s arms. Make no mistake: These movies are the most sensationalistic illustrations of the male gaze in history." - Indiewire
"Did I mention the spunky orphan, played by Isabela Moner of 'Middle School'? Must have forgotten her, much as the movie does for large swaths of time." - The Wrap
One of the most frequent complaints about the Transformers movies is their rather appalling track record when it come to female characters, commonly treating them like ditzy sex objects and little else. The last movie even included a bizarre subplot where Mark Wahlberg's daughter's boyfriend had to prove he wasn't a statutory rapist.
Though Bay at least doesn't try to objectify young Isabela Moner this time around, women are still mostly an afterthought by the sound of it.
Laura Haddock's Oxford professor has been routinely criticised as not having enough to do, not to mention being glammed up for the fleet of horny teenage boys who will be seeing the movie opening weekend.
