Truth Or Dare Review: 2 Ups & 8 Downs

7. The Characters Are Totally Unlikeable

Truth Or Dare
Blumhouse

If Truth or Dare's tone had veered a little closer to that of the Final Destination franchise, then perhaps there wouldn't feel like such a dissonance between the film asking the audience to root for these teens and how totally unlikeable they are.

With perhaps one major exception - that's Brad (Hayden Szeto), a nice young man who is struggling to come out to his dad - most of the focal teen characters are vapid, self-absorbed and simply irritating.

Setting them up to die horrifically sounds fun for a schlocky trash-fest such as this, but the film quite earnestly expects audiences to want them to survive, and it just doesn't work, at all.

Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes). General video game, TV and film nut. Occasional sports fan. Full time loon.
