Uncut Gems Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs
1. Adam Sandler Is Phenomenal
Adam Sandler has given us quite a few dramatic performances throughout his stellar career, but that hasn't necessarily changed the fact that he's best-known for his comedic reputation in films like Big Daddy, 50 First Dates or Grown Ups. So when you remember the kind of films he's renowned for, you can see why he might not have been the most obvious choice here, but that doesn't stop him from delivering what might just be a career-best performance.
That's not as to say that Howard isn't funny, because he is inherently funny - but it's a different kind of humour than the type we're used to seeing from Sandler. The character is so unfortunate that he's gotten to the stage where he's willing to laugh at himself - until it isn't funny anymore and he wants to do something about it. And that hubris is what ultimately results in him making the same mistakes over and over again.
Sandler delivers everything that is asked of him here - and then some. His conviction to the oddly eccentric character carries the film. He's so incredibly authentic in his approach to this notoriously off-the-wall man that we can't help but root for him - in spite of the fact that 9 times out 10, it ain't going to go his way.
Without a doubt one of the - in not the - best performances of Sandler's fine career, he is the heart and soul of Uncut Gems.
