Uncut Gems Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs
Ups...
6. The Vintage Presentation
Remember how we said Uncut Gems feels like it belongs to a different decade? Yeah, well that is undoubtedly one of its greatest strengths.
While a lot of that is down to how the plotting effectively managed to channel classic crime thrillers, it also owes a lot to its aesthetic. From the vivid colours of those hypnotic visuals to the surprisingly upbeat '80s-like score, the film is experimental, yes, but it's also presented in a very vintage way - something that benefits from the grainy filter. And it's all accomplished in such expert fashion that even something only mildly-dated like an iPhone 3 feels like an archaic piece of machinery.
The body of the film might be set in 2012, but it truly comes across like a relic of a bygone era.
