Uncut Gems Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

3. The Tone

Look there's no subtle way of saying this - some of the characters' actions in Uncut Gems (especially Howard's) are nothing short of baffling. They might even leave you wanting to roar at the screen with anger or, like we said earlier, throttle said character. And yet, they're all completely plausible because of the film's slightly exaggerated tone.

On the surface, its a hard-hitting gritty drama about the dangers of getting in too deep when you never should have gotten in at all. But the truth is that it's actually so much more than that, as the writers successfully manage to mix in some off-the-wall humour to add some colour to the story.

Like some of the best in its genre, Uncut Gems blurs the lines between drama and comedy, with the latter adding some much-needed levity when things get a little too tense - and it's a marriage of tones that works surprisingly well.
