Universal to tell us about the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

Black Hawk Down author Mark Bowden adapting I am a Man, a new 'historical thriller' set around the assassination of Martin Luther King.

Killing Pablo, Untitled Moon picture,Thunder Run), the author of Black Hawk Down who has his finger in another pie today. Variety say the writer will adapt a screenplay for Universal from the book I am a Man which deals with the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in Memphis, and the hunt for the killer James Earl Ray. The book is still currently being written by Hampton Sides but the deal to make it into a feature is a big one, reaching seven figures for scripting duties and the book rights of what is described as a 'historical thriller'. Martin Luther King was killed whilst out in Memphis whilst leading a protest of garbage workers who wer taking part in a strike because of low pay. He was shot on a hotel balcony by James Earl Ray who fled the country and was actually caught in the U.K. two months later. Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison but the King estate always proclaimed that Ray wasn't the real killer, with King's son going as far in the late 90's as helping the prisoner out with a re-trial. Hampton Sides, the author of the book new family and relatives who had close connections to both Ray and King, so we should be in line for a fascinating look at the events of what happened and how it effected all those invovled. There's lots of news today but this project is an important one and we shouldn't dismiss it. Bowden is a great writer and if they can get a director who wants to tell this tale then this should be a fascinating and informative film, which should touch on all the conspiracy's.
