Upgrade Review: 5 Ups And 1 Down
1. Up: Logan Marshall-Green's Leading Performance
Considering all that's been mentioned so far, it's clear that in order for everything in Upgrade to work, the lead has to bring their A-game. After all, the lead has to be able to carry much of the movie by themselves, effectively bounce between comedy and tragedy, and be able to sell the action scenes. Well, luckily this movie had Logan Marshall-Green, and he was more than up for the task.
He may be mistaken for Tom Hardy on multiple occasions, but Logan Marshall-Green makes a clear statement with his performance here that he's his own actor, and a great one at that. He expertly works with the plot's unique tone. You truly sympathize with Grey and his plight throughout the film. However, he then shows his more humorous side and pulls it off. His banter with STEM serves as one of Upgrade's major highlights. Then, to put a cherry on top, Marshall-Green appears to do much of the action scenes he's in, adding a layer of authenticity to his performance. Overall, he gives the exact performance this movie needed, and it is greatly appreciated.
