Upgrade Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

1. It's Probably The Best Venom Movie We'll Get This Year

Ever since the first trailer for Upgrade dropped, many film fans have been comparing it to the upcoming Tom Hardy-starring Venom movie, noting the narrative similarities (down-and-out men entering symbiotic relationships with powerful entitities) and, yes, the obvious physical resemblance between Hardy and Marshall-Green.

And honestly, Venom would need to be miraculously good to be anywhere near as entertaining, well-made and emotionally satisfying as this.

Given that the movie's trailers don't give much hope for it being anything more than a cynical, formulaic superhero flick, it really feels like Upgrade will end up the spiritual Venom movie fans deserve...just without the oil-black tendrils.

It's all the more galling as Upgrade was obviously produced for just a fraction of Venom's budget, but is highly likely to end up a more rewarding experience all things considered.
