Upgrade Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

2. The Genuinely Surprising Twists & Turns

Upgrade Logan Marshall Green

No spoilers here, but Upgrade is a film that subverts expectations in a number of sly ways. You might think you know where the plot is going when things kick into gear in act two, but needless to say, Whannell has some neat surprises up his sleeve indeed.

Just when the film looks like it's going to flirt with rote cliches, the rug is pulled and another layer is revealed, giving it a propulsive rhythm all the way to its final moments.

More to the point, you might think you know how it's all going to turn out, but again, things veer off in a refreshingly different direction, proving just how shrewd and thoughtful Whannell can be as a filmmaker.
