Us Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

3. The Disappointing Lack Of Scares
Jordan Peele made it clear before the movie's release that Us would be far more of a straight-up horror film than Get Out, so it's a touch disappointing that it largely feels so lacking in scares and suspense.
In fact, Us is often more effective as a comedy than it is as a horror, with much of the central scenario revolving around fairly conventional home invasion set-pieces and, yes, even the occasional jump scare.
The presence of the Tethered doppelgängers is inherently creepy, for sure, but moment-to-moment the atmosphere is oddly lacking in dread or even basic tension.
Thankfully the cast and crew do their damn finest to keep the film compelling regardless, but if you were hoping that Peele might out himself as a master of tightly-wound thrills, you might be left a tad underwhelmed.
