Vacation: 10 Ill-Advised Comedy Movie Comebacks

8. The Three Stooges

Following their high hit rate with original slapstick gross out comedies like Kingpin and There's Something About Mary, it was a curvevall of sorts when The Farrelly Brothers decided to pay loving tribute to one of Old Hollywood's most famous rib-tickling teams. Larry, Curly and Moe had been the subject of a biopic in 2000, but hadn't been front and centre in a cinema offering for decades. That was about to change!

As the original Stooges had long since departed to the great madhouse in the ether, it fell on the Farrellys to recast the line up. A foolhardy task to begin with it could be said, for characters embedded in the cultural make up of the nation, but eventually (after a decade or so of production wrangling) the roles were taken by Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamantopoulos.

In reverence to the established formula the action got split into three episodic chunks, packed with such sights as Larry David dressed as a nun and Sofia Vergara in scheming femme fatale mode. The head-slapping and "Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk"ing was in full effect, though the hilarious shadow of the original could never be escaped. A sequel is somewhat worryingly headed our way soon apparently.
