Vacation: 10 Ill-Advised Comedy Movie Comebacks

9. Get Smart

Steve Carell is respected throughout the industry as a consummate comedy professional, further cementing his credentials recently by taking over from Bruce Willis on Woody Allen's latest project. Even so, he has signed on the dotted line for a variety of duds, including this big screen reboot of the 1960s spoof TV spy series.

The idea was simple - drop Carell into a wacky espionage scenario and watch the sparks fly. Unfortunately it became one of those movies where everyone showed up and had a good time, but forgot to make a decent film along the way. Even Anne Hathaway in a succession of fetching outfits couldn't electro-shock the comedic corpse back to life.

Carell's supporting cast were top drawer - as well as Hathaway, there was Alan Arkin and Dwayne Johnson.  But they fought a losing battle, and their licence to thrill got swiftly revoked. The film's title should perhaps have given them some idea of the time they were going to waste in the first place!
