17. Wait, Dan Isn't A Secret Villain?

After Anne (Michelle Williams) breaks up with Eddie, she begins dating Dr. Dan Lewis (Reid Scott), and from the moment he appears on screen, he's an instantly suspicious character.

The rules of blockbuster filmmaking insist that he has to either be a secret a**hole who Eddie punches in the face before the end of the film, or he will turn out to be an underling working for Carlton Drake all along.

In a surprisingly subversive moment, neither of these things actually happen, and Dan just turns out to be a nice guy who, believe it or not, is even a fan of Eddie's. He helps treat Eddie when Venom starts to poison him from the inside, and is basically a stable, dependable force in Anne's life.

Much like the surprisingly likeable step-dad Paxton (Bobby Cannavale) in the Ant-Man movies, Dan sidesteps lame love triangle cliches and is an infinitely better character for it.
