Venom 2: 10 Mistakes Sony Must Avoid This Time
8. It's Formulaic
Person gains superpower; person struggles with acquisition of superpower; person comes to terms with superpower. We've seen it all before, and we've seen Venom's origin before. Sure, Spider-Man 3 was released back in 2007 and some people might appreciate a refresher and the character's origin isn't embedded in pop culture history, but still, this formula is overdone.
Why not take a leaf out of Captain America: Civil War's book? In that, we join Peter Parker having already established himself as Spider-Man, and the next Spidey stand-alone flick, Homecoming, built on this. Give the audience a little respect; we don't need all the details of a character's origin in order to enjoy them, and mystery keeps us hooked when done well.
Hopefully, with Eddie Brock and Venom's origins out of the way, the sequel's writer's can give us something meaty to chew on.
