Venom 2: 8 Directors Sony Should Hire

3. Joe Cornish

Cornish may not have particularly many directorial credits on his resume but his sheer talent at crafting genre fare alone has more-than-earned him a spot on this list.

Earning widespread acclaim in 2011 for his debut film, a sci-fi horror comedy called Attack the Block, both Cornish's script and direction expertly balanced the juxtaposing tones of the material to create an all-time cult classic. In the same year, he earned a co-writing credit on Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn alongside his friend and frequent collaborator Edgar Wright. That film wound up being an absolute delight, with Cornish and Wright's script perfectly encapsulating the tone and energy of the character's comic source material.

Now, Cornish is finally making a return to the big screen with his upcoming film, The Kid Who Would Be King, which is already earning early rave reviews. But after that, he seemingly has little on-the-docket, making him a perfect out-of-the-box candidate for Venom 2.

With Attack the Block, he showcased his love of horror and monster movies, while also demonstrating that he was more than capable of balancing moments of gruesome horror with moments of gut-busting levity. Considering how the first Venom was received (often with varying degrees of unintended laughs), it might serve Sony well to lean into the humor for the second one.

With Tintin, he proved that he could perfectly translate source material to the screen and with The Kid Who Would Be King (an adaptation of the King Arthur myth) he's proving that he's still just as adept at it.
