One of the film's funniest running gags involves Venom's patent hatred of Anne's (Michelle William) new partner Dr. Dan (Reid Scott).

At the start of the film, Anne informs Eddie that she and Dan are now engaged, causing Venom to have a major freak-out all while Eddie tries to maintain his composure.

"I would not be inconsolable if Dan were to fall into traffic and lose his head and feet and all his teeth," Venom tells Eddie.

Later in the film, Venom even makes Eddie hit Dan in the face, though at the end of the film Venom finally confesses that he does, indeed, like Dan, despite his relationship with Anne.

Most surprisingly, Dan actually survives the events of the movie. It would've been incredibly easy for him to get killed by Carnage in the final battle, leaving the door open for an Eddie-Anne reunion, but expectations were instead agreeably subverted.
