Venom Trailer 2 Reactions: 7 Ups & 4 Downs
5. Tom Hardy's Duel Performance
Look, the script might not be the best thing ever released under the comic book banner, but there is a lot of value in having Tom Hardy play your lead. He's a lot more than the hulking beast from The Dark Knight Rises who likes to mess with his voice a lot: his earlier performances were far more subtle character creations with flecks of vulnerability in there.
Seeing him effectively playing a dorky reporter (albeit one who clearly still knows to get his protein levels right and works out) who is drawing from Rick Moranis' performance in The Little Shop Of Horrors is truly great. He's got the comic chops to pull that off and he's likable to make Eddie Brock a sympathetic character even as he's wrestling with losing himself to Venom.
And as for his vocal performance as Venom... that's astonishing too. It's like Benedict Cumberbatch has been giving him lessons on using his voice as an instrument. If it wasn't already, the decision to cast him is definitely justified in what this trailer shows.
