Video Nasties: An A-Z Guide

X - Xtro

xtro 300x600 An obscure little British film that flirted around the edges of the Video Nasty scene, Xtro is definitely worth a watch. I think I caught it one night on the Sy Fy Channel a couple of years ago. It has made sufficient impact on me that I feel it warrants the X entry in this A-Z list. Come on, how many Xs are there? Directed by Harry Bromley Davenport, Xtro is a fairly entertaining little aliens on earth saga. There are some great scenes - the appearance of the alien which is very freaky looking and scarily effective. A woman gives birth to a grown man (ouch!). Tony, the alien's human son, discovers he has superhuman powers and sends a giant toy soldier to kill a nasty neighbour. This scene tickled me pink. I love it when inanimate objects come to life! Tony also summons up a clown and a puma to attack the grown ups. His dad just sort of disintegrates to death and the ending leaves his mother open to attack by clown and puma. He's a spiteful little git, isn't he? Not given the best of critical receptions, I nevertheless assert that Xtro is an endearing little British horror film that can serve as adequate chewing gum for the eyeballs.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
