Wait, Is Toy Story 4 Planning On KILLING OFF Woody?!
4. "Every Ending..."
Next up, let's read the official synopsis and a promo statement by the director (via EW)...
"Woody and the rest of the toys are back for an all-new adventure in “Toy Story 4,” welcoming new friends to Bonnie’s room, including a reluctant new toy called Forky. ‘Like most people, I assumed that ‘Toy Story 3’ was the end of the story,” said director Josh Cooley. ‘And it was the end of Woody’s story with Andy. But just like in life, every ending is a new beginning. Woody now being in a new room, with new toys, and a new kid, was something we have never seen before. The questions of what that would be like became the beginning of an entertaining story worth exploring."
Now, that all sounds like it's full of hope and new characters and the possibility of a whole new story (which will inevitably whip up talk of more sequels), but there's a pretty big point in there.
"Every ending is a new beginning."
EVERY ENDING. That's got ominous death vibes all over it. Now, there is some qualification there that the "ending" refers to Woody no longer being one of Andy's toys and the new beginning being his new life with Bonnie, but that doesn't entirely ring true. We HAVE seen Woody with Bonnie before, thanks to the shorts that have been released since Toy Story 3, so it's a little disingeuous to spin that.
The key thing here is that phrase - every ending is a new beginning - sounds like a story mantra, almost like it's an unofficial spiritual synopsis for the film that will form a major part of the marketing. And speaking of marketing, they've also done something very telling with the artwork that was just released...
