Wait, Is Toy Story 4 Planning On KILLING OFF Woody?!
3. The Poster
There are certain visual phrases in movie marketing that you can count on to mean very precise things. Black and white imagery means something BIG and sad is going to go down, mouths are supposed to make you think of sex, people standing in silhouette are designed to inspire thoughts of isolation or impossible odds... And if you're a female superhero on a poster, that means your butt is going to be on display prominently.
Fundamentally, when you look at a movie poster, you interpret it based on the thousands of visual hints you've seen on other movie posters - that's how the marketing machine feeds off itself to work (and why they repeatedly use the same sort of imagery over and over).
So when you're faced with a character seemingly walking off into the distance alone and tipping his hat as you would if you were saying goodbye, how else are you supposed to react than to assume he's a goner?!
Perhaps we should turn to the star to see how to react?
