War Dogs Review: 5 Ups & 4 Downs

2. Excessive Voiceover Narration

Voiceover narration doesn't always have to be lazy, but it's frequently employed as a device to convey information to the audience rather than have it transpire organically though character interactions.

Here Teller's David is our chosen narrator, though his verbiage honestly doesn't add much of merit to the movie and largely just rehashes information that's already apparent to all but the most unobservant viewer.

Again, it just feels like another Scorsese-esque trick that lacks the required insight and impact to be of much use. The use of freeze-frames to punctuate certain lines also feels overly tired and cliched.

With a more adventurous and imaginative script, this wouldn't have been necessary.
