War For The Planet Of The Apes Review: 10 Ups & 1 Down

7. Woody Harrelson's Morally Ambiguous Villain

War For The Planet Of The Apes Woody Harrelson

Though the trailers appeared to imply that Woody Harrelson's Colonel seemed like a rather one-note antagonist, in the final movie he's actually not this at all, with several intense dialogues opposite Caesar shedding greater light on his motives.

Horribly harsh though the Colonel's actions are, it's at least easy enough to appreciate and understand his motivations, suffusing the film with some much-appreciated moral ambiguity.

The character may not quite present the thorny, provocative quandaries of Koba from the last movie, but he is nevertheless a fantastic kinda-antagonist who plays off Serkis without stealing the limelight, and helps further accentuate the character of Caesar in the process.
