Warcraft: 8 Things It Actually Did Right

2. It Took Death Seriously (The Story Actually Had Consequence)

Warcraft movie

There are a surprising number or prominent main deaths throughout the runtime of Warcraft, characters who are central to the narrative and yet end up as causalities of the conflict.

One of the most striking death scenes is that of Durotan, who struggles against Gul'dan while his life is sucked from out of him. It's a powerful scene, especially as the other orcs stand watching, clearly disturbed by what they're seeing but unable to do anything to stop it.

Durotan's death is effective because it feels like most other movies would see him saved at the last minute. The same goes for that of Draka, Durotan's wife. Not only that, but King Llane Wrynn's sacrifice at the close of the movie is also unexpected (though the actual execution of the scene could have been better).

In the end, Warcraft at least feels like it has told a story with consequences, as lives are lost and sacrifices are made on both sides in order to resolve the situation between the humans and the orcs. It's rare for death to actually have meaning in a blockbuster.
