17. A Lizard in a Woman's Skin (1971)
A top Giallo trump for Lucio Fulci, Lizard in a Woman's Skin is more proof that Fulci does not deserve to be labelled as a lumpen horror hack as so many critics would have him deemed. Directing this kinky murder mystery, Fulci is at the height of his powers as a director. The plot is labyrinthine to describe but it involves Florinda Balkan having troubling dreams about lesbian sex sessions with her neighbour. When her neighbour turns up dead, Florinda is a suspect along with a host of other people. It is up to Fulci to unravel the plot and reveal who has done what to who. With a convoluted plot that will keep you guessing to the end, Lizard is prime edge of the seat viewing material. It provides a wonderfully groovy 1970s atmosphere with its two freaky hippies and marvellous Ennio Morricone/Bruno Nicolai score - it has a real psychedelic feel. Check this one out if you can, if only to prove to yourself that Fulci had talent.
