Hideo Kojima fans have been waiting years to see his beloved Metal Gear Solid franchise adapted to the big screen, but his more recent franchise Death Stranding has firmly beaten it to the punch.

In 2022, Kojima announced that a film based on the post-apocalyptic action series was in the works, with A24 later confirmed to be co-producing the project.

And while it's easy to picture this being another video game adaptation that, like the planned Metal Gear Solid movie, never actually gets made, development seems to be chugging along shockingly smoothly.

Last year rising filmmaker Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One) was confirmed to be both writing and directing, which considering his penchant for injecting deep-dish character drama into a more heightened genre film, seems like one hell of a neat fit.

While we don't have any hard-and-fast updates on when Death Stranding will release, Sarnoski did recently confirm that Kojima gave him carte blanche to develop a "totally new story" within the world of the games, suggesting the possibility that the game's star, Norman Reedus, may not appear in the film much if at all.
